Collected here are vocabulary guides to the people and places around you and yearly events. At first it might all seem a little confusing, but soon this stuff will be second nature!

Who’s Who?
Kocho-sensei	Principal
Kyoto-sensei	Vice-Principal. His or her’s desk is in the teacher’s room and may be the one who hadles your time off (nenkyu).
Jimucho-san	The School Office Chief. He or she is in charge of the budget and all administrative affairs.
JTE	Your supervisor. Probably the most important person in your Japanese school life! He or she will help you with most issues, school related and otherwise and is also the person who handles your paycheck.
Eigo no sensei	English teachers! Potentially your greatest allies!


Where’s Where?
Genkan	Entrance. Don’t forget to change your shoes!
Kocho-shistsu	Principal’s office.
Jimu-shitsu	Front Office
Hoken-shitsu	Nurse’s Office
Budou-kan	Martial Arts Room
Shichokaku-shitsu	Audio-Visual Room
Chori-shitsu	Cooking Room
Kaigi-shitsu	Meeting Room
Shokuin-shitsu	Staff/Teacher’s Room
Kyo-shitsu	Classrooms
Tosho-kan	Library
Taiiku-kan	Gymnasium
Shoku-do	Cafeteria
Tabako-ya	Smoking Room


A Typical ALT day
1. Morning Teacher’s Meeting (asa no uchiawase)
2. Morning Short Homeroom
3. First to Fourth period. There is usually a 5-10 minute break between periods.
4. Lunch (hiru-yasumi)
5. Fifth to Sixth Period
6. Cleaning (souji) and Short Homeroom
7. Club Activities (bunkatsu). These may last well into the night.

September	Start of 2nd Term Opening Ceremony (at the beginning of each term, Shigyoshiki )
Autumn	School Cultural Festival (Bunkasai) Ball Sports Day <Kyugitaikai)
December	End of the Year (Bon-enkai) Teacher’s Party
Late December to Early January	Winter Vacation ( Fuyu-yasumi*)
January	Start of 3rd Term Start of various university entrance exams Entrance exams for Junior and Senior High School (Nyugakushiken*)
March	Graduation ( Sotsugyoshiki* ) End of School Year
Late March to Early April	Spring Break (Haru-yasumi*)
Others Yearly Activities	Local field trip ( Ensoku* ) Major school trip (Shugakuryoko*)
